How to check if a VPN is working

Published by Chris on

To detect if the VPN is working properly, you can perform the following steps:

Confirm that the VPN is connected: First, check your VPN client or operating system settings to confirm that the VPN is connected and the connection is not interrupted. Some VPN clients display a connection status icon in the taskbar or menu bar.

IP Address Check: After connecting to the VPN, your IP address should change to the one assigned by the VPN server. You can check your IP address in your network settings or browser add-ons to make sure it has been changed to the VPN server’s IP address.

Test the network connection: You can test the network connection by using the Ping command or the Traceroute tool. Do this before and after connecting to the VPN to see if there is a difference. If you are unable to access a particular website or service while connected to a VPN, you may need to configure your VPN to allow access to that site or service.

DNS Check: If you have problems with DNS resolution while using a VPN, you may need to change your DNS servers. Tools like DNS Leak Test can be used to check for DNS leaks and check that your DNS settings are correct during a VPN connection.

Security Check: Finally, check that your internet traffic is securely encrypted. You can use a network packet capture tool such as Wireshark to check whether the VPN connection is encrypted. If your traffic is not encrypted, it is recommended to change the VPN settings to use a more secure protocol such as OpenVPN.

If you have followed the steps above and are still not sure if your VPN is working, please contact your VPN provider for further assistance.
